How do I house-train my dog?

Many rescue dogs aren't house-trained at first — they've never had a home where it mattered. The good news: it's usually learned quickly. With calm, routine and honest praise you'll be there within a few weeks.

Understanding how your dog works

House-training isn't obedience, it's habit. Your dog first has to learn that “outside” is the right place — and that it's worth waiting until then. Telling it off doesn't help — it only makes the dog anxious and can lead it to relieve itself in secret. Rely instead on positive reinforcement: what pays off gets repeated.

How to go about it

  • Fixed times to go out. Take your dog outside regularly — especially after waking, after eating and after playing.
  • Read the signals. Sniffing, circling, sudden restlessness — these are the typical signs. If you react at once and go out, you spare you both the accident.
  • Praise immediately. When your dog does its business outside, praise it lavishly in the same moment — ideally with a treat.
  • Take accidents calmly. If something does happen indoors, clean the spot thoroughly and odour-free — without comment. Punishment achieves nothing.

Patience pays off

Every dog learns at its own pace. In a new environment especially, after a long journey, it can take a few days longer. Stay friendly and consistent — soon your dog will go to the door on its own when it needs to.
